Dry End Temperature Control

Now, let's move on to the dry end. The dryer section is where most of the water is removed from the paper. This is a critical stage, as the temperature here determines the final moisture content of the paper.

We use steam to heat the dryer cylinders. By controlling the steam pressure, we can regulate the temperature of the cylinders. For example, if we want to increase the drying rate, we can increase the steam pressure, which raises the temperature of the cylinders. But we have to be careful not to dry the paper too quickly. If the temperature is too high, the paper can become brittle and develop cracks.

We also have to make sure that the temperature is evenly distributed across the width of the dryer cylinders. Uneven temperature can lead to uneven drying, causing the paper to curl or warp. To achieve this, we use multiple steam zones and control valves. These allow us to adjust the steam flow to different parts of the cylinders, ensuring a more uniform temperature.

The calender section is the final step in the paper - making process, where the paper is smoothed and given a final finish. Temperature in the calender rolls can affect the gloss and smoothness of the paper. A higher temperature can make the paper more pliable, allowing it to take on a better finish. But again, we have to be careful. If it's too hot, the paper can start to melt or stick to the calender rolls. We use oil - based heating systems in the calender rolls and monitor the temperature closely to avoid any issues.

Monitoring the temperature in all these sections is essential. We use a network of temperature sensors placed throughout the paper machine. These sensors constantly send data to a control system, which can then adjust the heating and cooling systems in real - time.

Automation plays a huge role in temperature control. With automated systems, we can set the desired temperature for each section and let the machine do the rest.
